I’d like to talk to you today about adding some items of interest into your Indoor Garden things that will make you and your plants happier.

For starters, there’s a lot to be said about adding a fountain to your plant’s settings.  There are so many inexpensive tabletop fountains that can be purchased from catalogues and department stores that can add not only sight and sound but will have a positive affect on you and your plants as well.

The sound of splashing water is soothing and helps the mind relax and clear itself of the daily clatter that we build up within ourselves.  It eases the tension in our muscles and let’s us rest better.

It also adds humidity to the room and surrounds your Indoor Garden with much needed moisture, especially during the long winter months ahead.  That humidity is also good for your health as the dry air from heating our homes robs the tender mucus membranes of the necessary moisture they need to keep you healthy.

The dryness can and will cause more problems with breathing and actually enables those cold bugs to take root much easier and stay longer in a dry parched throat and nose.  Consider adding a fountain to each room where you have your Indoor Gardens and you and your house plants will be so much happier and healthier for it.

Fountains, silk butterflies, and feathered bird accents are fun items to add to your house plant placements that will be conversation pieces and add a touch of fancy to your Indoor Garden.

I put lights on my Ficus tree at Christmas time and keep small brightly colored birds perched on its’ branches throughout the time I have to keep it indoors.  I take them off during the summer months when I take all my house plants except my African Violets and Christmas cactus out of doors to enjoy the sunshine and rain that they crave.

Consider these additions to your Indoor Garden.  You can change them for each of the upcoming Holidays throughout the long winter months ahead.  Most craft stores carry the bird and butterfly accents and if you are very crafty you might even make them yourself.

Pretty pots and unusual planters are not necessarily the only decorative accents you can add to your Indoor Garden.  Be creative and have fun.

Happy Gardening.

Indoor herb gardens can be great and a lot of people swear by them, but when you think about what kind of herb garden you want this is one of the first questions you face. Should I build an outdoor garden or have a small indoor garden possibly setup as a windowsill herb garden.

Listed below are the pros and cons of having an indoor garden as it compares to an outdoor garden, we assume that you’ve already decided that you want an herb garden for the many joys and healthy benefits that it can bring so we won’t be discussing the pros and cons of having an herb garden, we’ll save that for another article.

Pros:

Year round growing season – For a lot of us the indoor climate is set just right for us humans which is not a bad climate for plants and this allows for a year round growing season for your Indoor Herb Garden. Annuals will only last a year but you can start them indoors anytime even in the dead of winter.

Locality – Having your fresh herbs in your windowsill herb garden just sitting there begging to be used in your latest culinary delight is a huge benefit and adds a spontaneous aspect to your cooking.

Small Spaces – For many who do not have a large yard or any yard at all a simple indoor herb garden is the only possible option, but its also a great option for those who don’t have the time or physical ability to work a full outdoor garden.

First Timers – A simple indoor herb garden kit is a great way to start out in the herb gardening hobby. There are a variety of kits to choose from and most come with easy to follow instructions. Starting out indoors is great because you control the weather and therefore you can quickly be successful and gain confidence to move to an outdoor herb garden next time.

Cons:

Herb Choice – Unfortunately with an indoor garden due to its size there are limitations on the herbs you can plant. Obviously with a large greenhouse this limitation goes a way but for the average person setting up a kitchen herb garden only allows for about three or four herbs and these tend to be the smaller simpler kind.

Humidity – One main issue indoor gardens run into is having the right amount of humidity for the plants as must houses keep the humidity level at or below 40% and most plants would prefer a humidity level of at least 50%. There are a couple of options for solving this problem but it is something that should be monitored on a regular basis.

Aromatic Herbs – This falls in-line with the first con in that you typically plant aromatic herbs outdoors so you can enjoy their wonderful scents as its blown around by the wind. Indoors if you plant some aromatic herbs you might quickly find them overpowering as the air is confined and so too is their aroma. For most of these herbs a little goes a long ways.

Accidents – Accidents do happen everywhere but they tend to happen where life is the most busy and indoors around your kitchen is usually one of the busiest places in your house and sooner or later there will be an accident where one or more of your herbs takes a spill and can be lost for good. Yes outdoor gardens can be enticing for animals but a simple fence can fix that. Indoors your are likely to lose a plant once in a while to a simple silly accident. When deciding whether to have an indoor or an outdoor garden its good to look at the pros and cons. Knowing exactly which herbs you wish to grow in your garden and how you plan on using these herbs will also assist you in making your choice. Either way herb gardening is a wonderful hobby that can help add to your healthy lifestyle.

There are many advantages to bringing live plants into your home.  For one, you can expect better air quality, but I must ask you to be careful when choosing your plants, as I will explain in the Cons section of this article.

Having an indoor garden also offers aesthetic value to your home making it more attractive and lively.  Especially during the winter months when the view outside is dreary and colorless.  Indoor plants also allow serious gardeners an opportunity to enjoy their hobby thus giving them continued relaxation and pleasure throughout the year.

Indoor Plants are a source for interior design flare with the varied types of plants, flowers, herbs and trees as well as fountains, terrariums and a wide selection of planters from which to choose.  Even some of your outdoor plants currently in your garden may actually be brought indoors, but need a period of adjustment first to keep them healthy and happy.

There is a proven psychological factor to consider.  Studies show that indoor plants may have a significant contribution to your physical well-being by reducing stress, lowering blood pressure, cleaning the air to promote good health and even better productivity in your home workplace.

However, there are a few major considerations to bring to mind when contemplating an indoor garden.  The first being the many poisonous varieties of plants and flowers that could have a devastating affect on young children and pets if they should ingest the leaves, bark, roots and even coming in contact with the skin.

There are also surprisingly gruesome aspects to the plant world, like the carnivorous ones that can also be helpful in ridding the house of pests like flies.  There are wide varieties of exotic plants that can be both beautiful and dangerous.

Lastly, I want to point out for those of us who have existing health issues that living plants must be properly maintained in order to eliminate the possibility of mold or insect problems within the home.

Like all living things, there is a natural balance in the world, and everything has both pros and cons.  Plants are not exempt and most are as susceptible to some problem or another, be it insects, high humidity, mold or danger to our young children or pets.

One must use care in choosing the right plant for your home by doing the proper research in advance of any purchases but the rewards far outweigh the disadvantages.

Happy Gardening

I was just checking the progress of my site to see if there has been consistent traffic and what do I find?

The Great erb vs Herb debate.  The question is silly.  My question to all of those who had to make a Federal Case over the proper pronunciation of the word is simply this.  How to you pronounce Honesty.

Does no one recognize the silent h in any other word?  How truly rediculous to have a battle royal over American vs the rest of the free world’s preferences in the way a single word is pronounced.

This is a site dedicated to growing green things in the house.  Get over yourselves with the herb BS.

Thanks.

I know they make waterfall sounds, But fish tanks make annoying sounds from filters & sometimes people have pumps.

No, water fountains have a small trickling noise like a brook or creek. Depending on what type of fountain (size, material, how many tiers) will depend on how yours will sound. Indoor Fountains are great for blocking out annoying noises.

Two things to make sure your fountain is sounding "soothing"

1. Make sure your pump is not sitting directly on any plastic or metal on the basin, add a rubber pad or sponge to eliminate any vibrations.
2. use a fountain cleaner like Protec to make sure calcium build up does not make your pump work harder and create a "grinding" noise

I am serious, I feel like I forgot some completely obvious source for Indoor Plants. I know that you can usually go to nurseries for outdoor plants, but most nurseries here (Maryland) are closed for the winter. So where do you go to buy healthy indoor plants?

anywhere! your local super market should have some (like Kmart, Walmart, Meijer, any of them!)
or a Franks Nursery, Home Depot maybe…
or look in your phone book for some plant shops, even the ones that sell/deliver flowers would have them.

or put out and ad somewhere for any clippings. I always get clippings from my Mother

I live in an apartment on the 14th floor and don’t have a kitchen window or a yard to grow an herb garden. I do have a large sliding glass door to offer light. Is it possible to grow herbs from seed in my place? I do have a balcony, but Virginia gets too cold at times. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

Grow them in a box or some planters on your balcony! My favorite is the long planting box that hangs on the balcony rail. If it gets too cold bring them in and lay a plastic sheet on the rug to protect the floors, or you could put plastic bags over them outside to protect from freezing on a cold winter night.

You’ll probably end up replanting the whole thing every year anyhow, which is what I do. Ends up being about $15/ year to have fresh herbs to cook with.

What are the advantages or disadvantages? Why is indoor/outdoor gardening better?

I want to make a garden but I don’t know what would be better so I want to know the pros and cons. By the way i live in california where the weather isn’t too stable right now.

both can be satisfying, and I would recommend trying both for awhile til you can decide which you want to continue. There are many plants that can be grown indoors including orchids. Those are my favorites but they need special care. I don’t know what you mean by the weather being unstable. Is it rainy? damp? cold? All of these can affect plants if persisting for a while. If you grow indoors it’s usually recommended to have some plant lights to help them grow. Ask at Home Depot or other place where they sell this type of thing

Want a water feature without the cost or liability concerns of a pond? The pondless waterfall is among the hottest items in landscaping. Its just what it claims to be – a waterfall or stream without the pond. The cascading water simply vanishes among the rocks into an underground reservoir where it is pumped back to the top of the waterfall. Pondless waterfalls range from very small to very large. In addition to being safe and cost efficient, pondless waterfalls are virtually maintenance free!
